What's All This '...mod' Stuff, Anyhow ?

An intellectual background

His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej (05.12.1927 - 13.10.2016) in his diy boat "Micromod" (ไมโครมด). He was not only an avid boat designer, but also won the gold medal in the international OK dinghy class at the fourth Southeast Asian Peninsular Games (now called the SEA Games) in 1967. His Majesty built boats in a number of other classes too and also created his own class, the "Royal Mott Class", in which he designed three boats – Mod, Super Mod and Micro Mod.

✈ Motivation • Design Basics

The main inspiration for those nifty little synthesisers is of course His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. He named his boats "Mod", which means "Ant". So they are small in size but their impact is large !

As with our synthesiser shields - which are also small in size - but have a large potential due to sophisticated integrated circuits made by various manufacturers. And their useage is manifold due to the compatibility with the Arduino™/Genuino™ layout.

We have chosen the name "Mod" in order to pay respect to one of the greatest engineers of our time. His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej also referred to as วิศวกรผู้ยิ่งใหญ่.

All Synthesisers have an ultra - low phase noise, making them ideally suited to drive an Acousto-optic modulator which is an essential tool when researching on quantum-optical things.

Due to the nature of the design the synthesisers have a spectrum rich of harmonics - but they can be filtered away with a simple Lowpass. Some of the synthesisers are free-running types and some are locked to a 10 MHz reference.

Most of the synthesisers use an Six-Bit Digital Attenuator (Attenuation: 31.5 dB) which means, that the output power is in the range of +7 dBm down to -20 dBm (more or less).
